Explaining to a Skinny Person Just How Dieting Feels

Have you ever been REALLY, REALLY hungry?

Have you ever been REALLY, REALLY hungry for a whole day?

Now, imagine that you feel like that for a whole week.

Then, imagine how you would feel if you were told that you would have to feel that way for the rest of your life.

Then, imagine how you would feel if someone told you there was this great diet you could go on.  It works every time and you would NEVER feel hungry, again.  On this marvelous diet you can eat all of the cockroaches and eggplant you want.

  1. Laura,
I can really relate to the hunger issue. Losing weight and keeping weight off has been a life long struggle for me. I have attended Weight Watchers off and on for the past 40 years, trying to incorporate it as a life style change. It has helped me quite a bit by providing social support and helping me incorporate behaviorial changes in my everyday life. I meditate and exercise every day which helps keep my stress level down. I have to say however, I resent the amount of emotional energy that it takes to always be thinking about my weight and how "I measure up" so I can feel good about myself. It just doesn't feel fair that this become such a focus in life. At this point, I just want to be healthy and have energy in my life.

  2. My doctor suggested that I attend a support group, such as Weight Watchers, too. I have never gone, so I don't know if it would actually help, but I must admit that I really rebel at the idea of going. I don't want to be defined by whether or not I weigh an acceptable amount. The whole definition of groups such as Weight Watchers is that the people who go there struggle with weight issues. I don't want to think about weight issues. I want to think about ANYTHING else.

Therefore, I will go to board game MeetUps, sing-a-longs, choral groups, etc. - things that are NOT focused on how much or how little I weigh.

  3. Laura, I agree w/ you about focusing on the fun and positive activities in life that give one pleasure. Singing and doing crafts and travelling have given me joy that takes me out of myself. By the way, I am "anonymous' above. I am not sure how to post on your blog w/o having a google account. Jackie Newell in Fairbanks
